The video follows Blakeslee’s travels up and down the coast of northern New England, and was shot in DIY fashion with a unique lo-fi approach.
Long has the Newport Folk Festival inspired many musicians… Dan Blakeslee was struck immediately upon first visit to see friends perform. This video of his song “Tattooed Man And The Saint” is about an experience he had at the festival in 2012 with comrades Joe Fletcher (tattooed man) and Jonah Tolchin (the saint). At dusk the musicians stood atop Fort Adams after a hard rain, watching the arresting tangerine-colored sunset over the bay… the “fire on the sea”. An impromptu jamboree broke out as Joe Fletcher handed Blakeslee his guitar. Overjoyed, he began to play… such a kind and noble gesture, one Blakeslee will never forget.
Blakeslee shot the video in locations where he began as a songwriter and performer on street corners in Ogunquit, ME, Portsmouth, NH and Boston, MA soon after. Dan Blakeslee is currently celebrating his 20-year journey sharing his songs with the masses, and this video captures his “ode to the road.”
Blakeslee always been a fan of lo-fi cinematography. To get a pinhole photo effect for this video, he drilled a hole through a bottle cap and attached it to the lens, filming with a zoom Q2 camera. The footage was taken by Dan Blakeslee with assistance from Amy Kucharik in locations as Portland, ME, Ogunquit, ME, Portsmouth, NH, Newburyport, MA, Somerville, MA and Newport, RI.
The song “Tattooed Man and the Saint” is from Dan Blakeslee’s 2014 album “Owed To The Tanglin’ Wind,” featuring The Low Anthem (Ben Knox Miller and Jeffrey Prystowsky), Joe Fletcher, Jonah Tolchin, Joseph Arnold, Ian Fitzgerald and Jenee Halstead.
